Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach: Close Heats and Heartbreaks in Round 2
Author: GrindTV.com
As the morning high-tide pushed action up the point to Rincon, many surfers struggled to put together two solid scores in the early heats. John John Florence was one of the few surfers to put in a standout performance, blending vicious carves with solid airs for a heat total of 16.26-- the third highest total of Round 1.
Once the tide started to drop in Round 2, the maxim 'no easy heats' held true, as almost every surfer in the round posted great scores. Of all 24 surfers in Round 2, Taylor Knox was the only surfer who failed to post a heat total in the double digits.
Freddy Patacchia still managed to advance over Michel Bourez after getting a paddle interference in the opening minutes. But Bourez wasn't the only surfer to lose a close heat.
Pat Gudauskas,
Miguel Pupo,
Ace Buchan,
Kieren Perrow, and
Kolohe Andino all also lost heats at the buzzer in Round 2. And the majority of Round 2 match-ups were decided by less than 2 points.
Another day of solid swell is expected tomorrow, so look for more hard-fought heats to resume at 7 a.m. in
Victoria.
Phenomenal lensman Matt Kleiner has been traveling with Josh Kerr for part of the year, gathering footage for an upcoming signature film. Here is Matt's edit of Kerrzy's winter on the North Shore. His outstanding performance in hollow lefts, big rights, and even bigger Waimea make it hard to deny that Josh Kerr is about as well-rounded a surfer as anyone.
