Aussie lensman Nat Lanyan spent a few days documenting the exploits of Laurie Towner, Wade Goodall, and Dean Brady, as they road tripped down Australia's East Coast for a wintertime cyclone swell. As Nat reported, "This was a last minute spontaneous trip. I had never really filmed with these lads before. They are a tightknit crew. They nearly kicked me out of the car early because I was an imposter, but I soon won them over with free apples and muesli bars." Sounds like quite the trip, Nat.

Surf films can be a lot like heavy plastic surgery. In both cases the attempt to create a thing of beauty ends up mutating the subject to the point that the original form is unrecognizable. Cutting B-grade material and tucking botched waves away from view produces a distilled image of wave-riding, but hardly mirrors the experience of heading down to the beach for a surf.
