BACK TO WORK FOR THE LADIES OF THE BILLABONG PRO Tahiti

AFTER three progressive standby calls this morning here at Teahupoo, it has been announced that the Billabong Pro Tahiti will resume competition at 11am today with the first quarter-final of the women’s division. If conditions maintain, and the schedule runs according to plan, we should be crowning the Billabong Pro Tahiti’s women’s champion by around 3pm local time.

The swell appeared to have remained very small at first light, but the incoming tide has brought with it hopefully the first nudges of a new swell. Though still a little inconsistent, both the size and regularity of the swell is improving, and expected to sustain throughout the day. The sets are averaging above shoulder height at around 3-4’+, and there are some barrels to be had.

Foster’s Men’s World Tour competitors Kalani Robb, Occy and Shane Beschen were out there from around 7am, sussing out conditions and returned with a good report.

“We thought it was flat again at first light this morning, but we’re relieved to find out there’s a kind of a new swell out there. It’s around four feet, and Kalani and I each got a couple of good barrels. It’s a good direction…it’s a bit slow, but if it gets more consistent I’m sure it’s good enough for the girls,” said Occy as he dried off for breakfast around 8.30am.

The centre of the media spotlight will be surely be on the second quarter-final between Hawaii’s Keala Kennelly and Peru’s reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Sofia Mulanovich (Peru).

With her head heavily bandaged after hitting the reef in her round one heat of the Billabong Pro Tahiti last Thursday, Kennelly will be out to secure her fourth Teahupoo title, while Mulanovich, who is the defending event champion, will be out to win again, and further advance her lead in the ASP Women’s WCT ratings.

If Mulanovich wins the event, it will be her third consecutive victory this season, the identical platform from which she launched the campaign for her maiden World Championship title last season.
