Freddy Patacchia still managed to advance over Michel Bourez after getting a paddle interference in the opening minutes. But Bourez wasn't the only surfer to lose a close heat.
Pat Gudauskas, Miguel Pupo, Ace Buchan, Kieren Perrow, and Kolohe Andino all also lost heats at the buzzer in Round 2. And the majority of Round 2 match-ups were decided by less than 2 points.
